Music and Photojournalism...

For me there has always been a link between photojournalism, or just plain old photography and music. Should it be the music playing when the shot was taken, or when the shot is being developed. There is a story I read years ago about how the early pioneers of photography, I think it was Edward Muybridge, or it may have been Fox Talbot, used a piece of classical music to time his development time.
Then there was Ansel Adams, trained as a proffesional classical musician before he took the plunge into proffessional photography. Whilst I delved into the work of the early Sixties fashion photographers it was all the Jazz of Chet Baker, Miles Davies and Dave Brubeck as I poured over the pictures of David Bailey(who wanted to be Chet Baker as he started out as an assistant to John French.), Patrick Litchfield, Terence Donovan and Duffy alongside the burgeoning sound of the Rolling Stones.
When the life-changing moment came when I discovered Tim Page it was all about The Doors, and their "distant icy sound" as Page called it. Jimi Hendrix, Cream and the Electric Prunes...I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night...and the cringingly funny Mothers Of Invention.
More recently I discovered Zoriah Miller, apparently when he was working in the Gaza Strip he used to walk around listening to Yael Naim on his headphones. Now he says he has advanced his photography more to engage his subject, no longer listening to music as he shoots saving it for before and afterwards.
I compromise usually with just one ear-phone as I wander around shooting for this blog and my own personnal fulfilment, the choice for me recently has been Vibraspere and Boards Of Canada.
For me knowing what music was in the head of the photographer when he was working on something adds an extra dimension to the photographs. For me the ultimate Gallery experience would be incorporating music.
Try looking at Zoriah Miller's blog for his shots from Gaza whilst listening to Yael Naim. Check out Tim Page's Nam shots whilst listening to the Doors... it works...adds an extra depth...
